For teachers

One board per student, one roster for you.

Classroom is our plan for teachers. Your students build their boards in their own free accounts, link the one they're handing in to your class, and you open each one, read-only, from a single roster.

Choose Classroom to buy it for the year. You'll sign in and answer a few questions about your classroom first.

Classroom

$99 per teacher / year

Billed yearly; there’s no monthly option.

Plus applicable sales tax, if any.

  • All your classes and sections, up to 210 student projects at once
  • Students use their own free accounts and are never charged
  • A student links one of their own projects with your class link, and it stops counting against their free projects
  • You get a roster and can open each linked project, read-only
  • You can’t change a student’s work or see anything else in their account
  • Everything in Personal for your own boards
  • For students 13 and older

How it works

  1. You make a class for each section or assignment. Each class gets its own link to hand out.
  2. Each student opens the link, signs in to their own free account, and picks the project to link, or starts a new one. Before they choose, we tell them exactly what you'll be able to see.
  3. Their project shows up on your roster. Open it whenever you like, read-only, until the class ends.

Tell us about your classroom

Three questions, and three more if you like. The button opens your email app with your answers filled in and addressed to us; nothing is sent until you press send there. We read every one and reply, and we'll write again when Classroom opens.

Your role required

We use your school's name and these answers only to see who wants Classroom, and your email address only to write back; we share neither with anyone. Our privacy policy says how long we keep them.

Questions teachers ask

What can I see?

Your roster lists each student who linked a project to your class: their name and email address from their String Theory account, the project's title, how many cards it holds, and when it last changed. You can open any linked project and look around it read-only, the same way anyone sees a shared board: the board itself, the dossier, the timeline and the map.

What can't I see?

Anything else in a student's account: their other projects, their other boards, their settings. You can't change their work. Students never see each other's projects, and a student can see, on their own project, that you can see it.

Do my students pay, or sign up for anything special?

No. Each student uses an ordinary free account, and nobody will ever ask them for payment details. A project linked to your class doesn't count against their two free projects, so a student in three of your classes doesn't run out of room.

What happens at the end of the term?

Every class has an end date. It starts at the end of the current term, and you can move it. When it passes, or when you close a class early, its links end: you stop seeing those projects, and nothing is deleted. Each project stays with its student and counts toward their free projects again. A student can leave a class at any time, too. If you cancel your subscription, your classes end when the year you paid for does.

Can I remove a student, or keep someone out?

Yes. Removing someone from your roster ends their link and leaves their work alone. A removed student can rejoin with the same link, so to keep someone out, make a new link for the class (the old one stops working at once) or close it.

How many students does it cover?

Up to 210 student projects linked at once, across all your classes. That's three sections of 35 with two assignments running at the same time, or five sections of 35 with one. Ending a class, or removing students who have finished, frees up room.

My students are under 13. Can we use it?

No. String Theory is for people 13 and older, on every plan, Classroom included. Please don't use it with an elementary class, or with a middle-school class unless every student is 13 or older.

How do I pay?

By card, once a year. Your own card or a school purchasing card both work. We can't take purchase orders or send district invoices yet; if your school needs that, say so when you write and we'll talk it through.

Can I get it now?

Yes. Choose Classroom, sign in or create your free account, answer a few questions about your classroom, and pay by card for the year. Your Classes card appears on your Account page as soon as the payment goes through. Unlike an inquiry, those answers go with the purchase to Paddle, which handles the payment; our privacy policy says exactly what goes and why.

Is there a unit I can start from?

Yes: The Great Gatsby: Character Map, a five-period English 11 unit with a rubric and ground rules for media, citation and AI.
